I recently joined a couple of friends for dinner at Kentucky’s famous restaurant - Hall’s on the River. This legendary place truly does sit next to the river and if you sit on the covered deck, you will have a great view of the Kentucky River! Hall’s is just minutes from Lexington and is near the historic Fort Boonesboro. Hall’s is definitely a family friendly place to check out. They have tons of seafood options and many down home Kentucky local favorites. I especially love the beer cheese, which Hall’s makes daily and they are famous for. You will see Hall’s beer cheese products all over Kentucky. I would know as I love this stuff. Hey, all good Kentuckians love beer cheese! I so had to try the beer cheese soup along with my meal. I wasn’t disappointed. Only if I could make that stuff at home. Guess I will just have to go back Hall’s. I hear they do have fried Oreos now!!

Check out these pictures from Hall’s and see pictures of the Kentucky River, my view while dining at Hall’s. Notice the dirt on the trees. That is just how far the river rose during the great floods of May 2010.

To read more about Hall’s history, today’s happenings and to view the menu, visit their official site at:

So how could I drive past the home of the Lexington Legends minor league baseball team and not snap a quick picture? I love this place! Applebee's Park, the official home of the Lexington Legends is truly one of my favorite ways to enjoy summer time in Lexington.

There is nothing like spending a warm summer evening at the park watching great baseball and experiencing all the fun and excitement that is minor league baseball.

My Legends jersey!

The Lexington Legends have been Lexington's baseball team since 2001 and have provided us years of fun and excitement season after season. Several years ago even future baseball Hall of Fame candidate Roger Clemons, suited up to pitch a game for the Legends. Yes, THE Roger Clemons! The game was carried live by ESPN and various other national media outlets.  So if you are a Lexington resident or just visiting for the weekend, get out to the park and watch the boys play! Lots of great family fun, peanuts, popcorn and Cracker Jacks!

For ticket infomation, visit www.LexingtonLegends.com. See you at the park!

what a view!

The First Saturday in May - It’s the day when you roll out of bed and hit the great outdoors; something just feels so different on this historic day. Everything feels so special. You feel like the grass has never been greener, the flowers have never been prettier and you take a deep breath and reflect on how great it is to be a Kentuckian. It’s an overwhelming sense of pride. I love sharing this time of the year with my friends, family and clients. Many of my clients are moving in from other states and always want to know “how to throw a great Derby party.” The truth of the matter is, it’s pretty simple – eat, drink and play like a true Kentuckian and you will look like Kentucky bred royalty. Even if you were not born here, you can simply play it off with the right tools and must haves for your Kentucky Derby Party.

We are just days away from the Big Day, so let’s get this on track!

Step 1: Decide what kind of Derby party you want to have:

1. Do you want to throw an elegant high society bash where you want to capture the feel of millionaires’ row? Then send out fancy invitations and tell your guests to dress to kill! Serve seafood and other Southern Specialty in your finest china and linens.

2. Or do you want to capture the sprint of the rowdy Derby infield, where the regular folks eat, play and watch the race? If this makes your day rosy, throw a TV onto the deck, BBQ everything southern – ribs, corn, etc.

Step 2: Regardless of your party style, below are MUST HAVES:

1. Stock up on 3 common “must haves”:
• Food
• Liquor
• Gambling

Food Should Include:
Bourbon Balls
Derby Pie
Cheese Grits
Beaten Biscuits and Country Ham
BBQ Pork
Benedictine
Kentucky Beer Cheese
Pecan Pie
Hot Brown
Kentucky Burgoo
Henry Bain Sauce

Drinks Must Haves:
Mint Juleps (the official drink of the Derby)
Kentucky Bourbon (Makers Mark, Woodford Reserve, Blanton’s, etc)
Whiskey
Sweet Tea
Lemonade
Artsy fartsy shot of my mint julep

Gambling:
Derby Pot or choose to auction off each horse to the highest bidder
Jackpots (place all the Derby horses in an envelope, have a set “buy-in” amount and everyone draws a name out of the pot)
-if you are able, hire a bookie to place bets from party

Other must have items include: Derby hats, anything with Roses such as table centerpieces, Mint Julep cups, betting forms, dry erase board where you can write the names of the Derby horses, anything you can find horse themed. Bottom line: just have fun and make your Twenty 10 Run for the Roses, the most exciting Derby party on the block!

The First Saturday in May is very special, so get ready to party and enjoy this special day!

It’s springtime in Kentucky! Overnight we witnessed the trees bloom, flowers blossom and the horses race! Perfect weekend here in the Bluegrass State. I had some clients in from Minnesota and although we spent the majority of time house hunting, we did manage to squeeze in a few hours of fun at Keeneland race track. The feature race of the day, Saturday, April 3, 2010, was the Central Bank Ashland Stakes (Grade 1 race).

I must say I believe in signs and in one of the homes we viewed earlier in the day, we saw this picture. It's from the Ashland Stakes race at Keeneland in 1996. Funny how we saw that on the day of the Ashland Stakes 2010!

Keeneland is such a great way to let visitors experience how we Lexingtonions (and residents from all over the state and other parts of the country) entertain ourselves at the track. When you visit Keeneland, it is easy to fall in love with the sheer beauty of the track, the beautiful multi-million dollar horses, which can run upwards of 90 miles an hour and the warm southern hospitality.

The winner of the race was Evening Jewel, horse #8. Evening Jewel and jockey Kent Desormeaox picked up the win in the 400,000 pursuit. Check out the video of the pre-warm up in the Keeneland paddock. All the individuals you see in the video are mostly owners. Every horse has its very own entourage! I will tell you that my clients and I enjoyed watching Evening Jewel warm up in the paddock. She was so feisty and you could tell she was ready to race. Protesting (horse #7) featured in the video, had a good race also. After watching Evening Jewel warm up, I had to place a bet on her to win! Sometimes you can just tell when a horse is ready to hit the dirt track and show off!

If you can, get out to Keeneland! When I say it’s a beautiful track, if you don’t take my word for it, take Hollywood’s word! They often come knocking to shoot movies here, including the box office smash hit Seabiscuit! Learn more about race times and things to see at Keeneland at their official home - www.Keeneland.com.

Here is a picture I recently snapped at the Federal Equestre Internationale (FEI) World Cup Qualifier here in the Horse Capital of the World, beautiful Lexington, Kentucky. The jumping event took place at the brand new indoor stadium at the Kentucky Horse Park. Of course Lexington will host the 2010 World Equestrian Games beginning in September 2010. This will be the very first time the World Games have been held outside of Europe. The city is currently undergoing many projects to accommodate the guest and participants of the games. Lexington and its residents are abuzz and extremely proud to host the games for the very first time in the United States. For all things FEI World Equestrian Games, please visit the official site at www.alltechfeigames.com.  See you at the games!

Today I enjoyed a great lunch with my Lexington Realtor buddy Whitney Pannell and University of Kentucky basketball legend Tom Heitz. We ate at the famous Wheeler's Pharmacy in Lexington, Kentucky on Romany Road in the heart of the Chevy Chase. Word on the street is that every Kentucky coach since Adolph Rupp eats at Wheeler's after a Kentucky basketball victory. Even current Coach John Calipari eats at Wheeler's following every UK win. Tom visited with us and we reminisced about his playing days for the Kentucky Wildcats. He has many funny stories from his playing days and it was a blast getting to hang with him and Whitney for lunch. After lunch, Tom was headed over to the Joe Craft Center, the practice facility, to see the Kentucky team suit up for practice before tomorrow's big SEC showdown against Vanderbilt.  Definitely a great day and if you get a chance, go visit Wheeler's for lunch! You'll love this little Lexington hotspot. Never know who you might see!

The statue of John C. Breckinridge as seen below stands proudly in Lexington’s Cheapside Park in the heart of downtown. It has stood on Cheapside for well over a century, but will be moved in the next two week, as the park is undergoing a renovation. Breckinridge was a United States Vice-President and also served in the U.S. Senate before joining the Confederacy during the Civil War.

Fifth Third Bank donated $750,000 for naming rights for the new pavilion to be constructed, which will house Lexington’s Farmer’s Market on Saturdays, the very popular Thursday Night Live concert gathering and many other events. Cheapside Park is a great gathering spot in downtown Lexington. It is a great place to have lunch outside on a warm day. The Courtyard Deli, Cheapside Bar and Grill and Bluegrass Tavern are great spots to visit.  I personally love hitting the Cheapside patio for lunch on a warm summer day. There is nothing better than enjoying a great lunch with friends while being able to take in all the sights and sounds of downtown Lexington. You get a real sense of the city! And the Thursday Night Live concerts are truly one of my favorite summer time events!

And don’t worry; our Breckinridge statue will not be gone forever. He is being moved about 50 feet to the Main Street side of the park and will face the street.

So if you’re downtown visit Cheapside Park and enjoy the best park in the middle of downtown Lexington, Kentucky!

Today I spent the morning at Lexington’s famous Spaldings Bakery and let me tell you, I’m so ready to go back and its only lunchtime…..bad news for me though - it‘s 12:20 p.m. and they are already closed! And that is not surprising. Spalding’s, a Lexington doughnut institution since 1929, is by far the most beloved bakery in town and there is a reason why. It’s all about supply and demand. Come early, very early, wait in the long line and if you’re lucky, you will score some sugary goodness. And when they run out of the baked goods, the doors close, so get there early!!  Sorry about your luck if you didn’t roll out of bed early enough.

We think the Spalding family knows a thing or two about making a doughnut, so good -that they literally melt in your mouth.  Each morning, as the Spalding family arrives at the bakery, they begin whipping up their secret family recipe for their glazed heavenly pieces of goodness, cakes, homemade rolls and other sweet sugary goodies. When the goods are baked to perfection and the doors open, the bakery is greeted by a long line spanning around the building.  Even in the middle of winter, that big line is present every single day! Everyday but Tuesday, as Spalding’s is closed. That tradition started tradition during World War II due to food rationing. “We started closing during the war and never stopped, “says Martha Edwards, owner &  granddaughter of the founders.

Once you roll into Spalding’s, it’s like a flash back in time. Everything about the place is so retro and without question reminds us of the rustic nostalgic feel of a very old bakery. Up until recently, they still used an old school 1905 cash register from the store’s early years. You can still see it, as it proudly sits on display and check out all the old school pictures of the bakery from over the years. While I was waiting in line, owner Martha Edward showed me a picture of a wedding cake she had made 50 years ago. She was telling me how this weekend; she is baking that very same cake for the couple’s 50th wedding anniversary. After that story, I purchased a double chocolate devils food cake, along with my doughnuts.

The bakery goodies, the atmosphere and the stories are what drive people in groves to Spalding’s. And when you visit, don’t forget your cash, as they don’t accept credit cards.

Spalding’s is no hidden gem. They recently received national acclaim for making some of the tastiest doughnuts in the country. So if you’re ready to taste a doughnut out of this world, check out Spalding’s located on Lexington’s Winchester Road. I might just see you there!

what a view!

It’s the day when you roll out of bed and hit the great outdoors; something just feels so different on the first Saturday in May. Everything feels so special. You feel like the grass has never been greener, the flowers have never been prettier and you take a deep breath and reflect on how great it is to be a Kentuckian. It’s an overwhelming sense of pride. I love sharing this time of the year with my friends, family and clients. Even if you were not born here, you can simply play it off with the right tools and must haves for your Kentucky Derby Party.

We are just days away from the Big Day, so let’s get this on track!

1. Decide what kind of Derby party you want to have:
Do you want to throw an elegant high society bash where you want to capture the feel of millionaires’ row? Then send out fancy invitations and tell your guests to dress to kill! Serve seafood and other Southern Specialty in your finest china and lines.

2. Or do you want to capture the sprint of the rowdy Derby infield, where the regular folks eat, play and watch the race? If this makes your day rosy, throw a TV onto the deck, BBQ everything southern – ribs, corn, etc.

Regardless of your party style, below are MUST HAVES:

1. Stock up on 3 common “must haves”:

Food Should Include:
Bourbon Balls
Derby Pie
Cheese Grits
Beaten Biscuits and Country Ham
BBQ Pork
Benedictine
Kentucky Beer Cheese
Pecan Pie
Hot Brown
Kentucky Burgoo
Henry Bain Sauce

Drinks

Bottom line: just have fun and make your 2009 Run for the Roses, the most Derby party on the block!

The First Saturday in May is very special, so get ready to party and enjoy this special day!

Autumn is a wonderful time of the year and one that many Lexingtonians agree is the most beautiful season in the Bluegrass state. Lush fall foliage dazzles us with its splendid hues - everything from golden yellows, sage greens, and brilliant reds. With the "Dog Days" of summer now far behind us, Lexingtonians are eager to get out and enjoy the cool, crisp weather and take part in many of the exciting events happening in and around Lexington. I welcome you to explore these top 5 recommendations for this exciting season:

1.) Keeneland Race Track
Lexington’s thoroughbred race track has two meets per year - the Spring and Fall - in addition to several horse sales, attracting high profile celebrities and international royalty seeking to invest in Kentucky’s famed horse racing tradition. During the Spring and Fall Meets, spectators enjoy festive "Sunday Best" attire, gathering to socialize and enjoy the spirit of the races. Don’t forget to arrive early to witness the horses´ morning workouts, enjoy a Keeneland breakfast worthy of a champion, or to tailgate with family and friends under a canopy of lush maple and oak trees. Keeneland is not just locally famous - Hollywood has recently featured the historically-rich race track! Almost all of the scenes in the movie Seabiscuit were shot on location, with many Lexingtonians serving as extras in the film!

2.) Tradition of Kentucky Sporting Events
Kentucky is a HUGE sports-minded state - so much so that it truly is a way of life! The onset of fall brings excitement and energy throughout the Bluegrass state, as die-hard Kentucky fans gear up for another intense season of UK Athletics. The Kentucky football and basketball programs enjoy hundreds of thousands of true-blue fans. Kentucky is a member of the Southeastern Conference, considered to be the most intensive football conference in collegiate athletics. Students, alumni, families, and friends have tailgating down to a science! Beer cheese, fried chicken, barbeque, and an array of Southern-style favorites are found at nearly every tailgating stop outside the stadium. The Kentucky basketball season is marked by the opening of Midnight Madness in mid-October. Kentuckians literally camp out weeks before the event in order to increase their odds at snagging prized tickets to the very first basketball practice of the season. This special event draws over 24,000 screaming fans packed into historic Rupp Arena to root the Wildcats into the start of another highly anticipated National Championship run.

3.) Autumn Festivals around the Bluegrass Region
If you love road trips - and who wouldn’t with Kentucky’s beautiful fall foliage! - and enjoy a true festival experience, Kentucky has everything you could hope for in and around Lexington! From arts and crafts to music, history, and cars you will surely find something to peak your interest! Enjoy the Master Musicians festival or Somernites Cruise in Somerset, Harvest and Wine Festival in Nicholasville, Berea Craft Festival in Berea, Festival of the Bluegrass in Lexington, or even the Woolly Worm Festival in Beattyville - an event where you actually race woolly worms as a highlight of the fall season! Wherever your interests may lie, you’re sure to be pleased with fall in the Bluegrass state!

4.) Lexington Gallery Hops
Lexington takes pride in its rich arts and cultural scene and encourages its patrons and visitors to experience genuine, original works of art by hosting the famed Gallery Hops on five select Friday nights throughout the year. Now in its second decade, the Lexington Gallery Hop is a fun-filled evening of art exploration - touring museums, artist’s studios, and galleries in downtown Lexington - and is perfect for art collectors, connoisseurs, or simply the curious to experience this exquisite and sociable event in Lexington.

5.) Boyd’s Orchards and Kelley’s Corn Maze
A true tie if ever there was one, Boyd´s Orchards and Kelley´s Corn Maze are two Kentucky fall traditions definitely worth experiencing! At Boyd’s pick your own fruits and vegetables while the children are entertained on the large playground. Stop in for a quick snack or delicious dessert at the Apple Blossom cafe or enjoy shopping in the unique gift shop. The children are sure to enjoy the hayrides, animal center, corn maze, and "pick your own" pumpkin patch! Boyd’s is also home of the "Seven Festivals of Fall." At Kelley’s Family Farm, you’re sure to be entertained! From the moment you enter the 8-acre corn maze, you’ll be immersed in history! Each year, the Kelley family selects an important figure in Kentucky’s history to mold the maze after. For the Fall of 2008, former U.S. President and Kentucky-born Abe Lincoln was the feature design of the maze. Kelley’s Farm offers both day and nighttime maze excursions! In addition, you will find pumpkin patches, fresh fruits and vegetables, and lots of other fall favorites and treats! Hayrides, corn hole games, and the new hay pyramids are just several more fun fall adventures waiting for you and your family to explore!
