Lexington KY Schools
With nearly 300,000 residents in the area, the city of Lexington is a bustling center of business, cultural and education. Lexington, once called Athens of the West, due to its high intellectual, is still today a very well educated modern society that fully supports education, cultural and the arts. The name Athens of the West was given to Lexington in part because during the late 1700´s, the state´s first university, Transylvania, "The Tutor to the West" opened. The first library in the state and the first newspaper in the state were published here too. Even today many agree that Lexington still retains its Athens of the West status as the city is renowned for its focuses on excellent education.
Lexington (Fayette County) has many schools in which to choose from. The Fayette County Public school system is comprised of 33 elementary, 12 middle and 5 high schools and currently serves more than 35,000 students. The system also includes two technical schools and a school of the creative and performing arts (SCAPA) is also offered by the public school system. If you prefer a more intimate setting for your child´s educational needs, Lexington boast nearly 30 private institutions from pre-school through high school.
Lexington Universities
Lexington is also the home of 2 major Universities, both serving as educational leaders. The University of Kentucky founded in 1865, focuses on excellent academics, scholarly exploration and research and is quickly becoming one of America´s Top 20 research centers. Many sectors of the University have received national acclaim. the Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce, the Gatton College of Business and Economics, the College of Medicine, the College of Communications and Information Studies, the College of Pharmacy, Arts & Science and Education all have been nationally ranked.
Kentucky´s educational pioneer, Transylvania University, is a highly distinguished private liberal arts university. Founded in 1780, Transy (as its friends call it) is the first university in Kentucky and the 16th oldest University in the nation. Transy has one of the most lustrous histories of any school around. Serving as the first college west of the Allegheny Mountains, the University had the first medical school in the West, and also had a law school, a college of the arts and sciences and a seminary. Many of the nation´s very first doctors, lawyers, business individuals and educators attended Transylvania.
Many famous individuals in American history are synopsis with Transylvania. Names associated with the school include Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, John Adams, Henry Clay, Jefferson Davis, Stephen Austin and Cassius M. Clay. The school has graduated 2 U.S. Vice Presidents -John C. Breckinridge and Richard M. Johnson, 50 U.S. Senators, 101 U.S. Representatives, 36 Governors, 34 Ambassadors and Supreme Court Justice John Marshall Harlan. Today, the small school of about 1,100 students (kept small by design) is consistently ranked among the top private universities in the nation.

Georgetown KY Schools
Just a short 20 minute drive from Lexington is Georgetown, KY. Georgetown (Scott County) is a city "where tradition and progress meet." The city of Georgetown changed dramatically when new neighbor Toyota Manufacturing moved to Georgetown during the 1980´s. Since the arrival of Toyota, Georgetown has experienced a rapid expansion as many new shops, restaurants and schools have opened to accommodate the growing population. Scott County is the home to one high school -the Scott County Cardinals, 3 middle schools and 8 elementary schools. In addition, the district has a career technical school and a performing arts school that is by invitation.
Georgetown is also home the Georgetown College Tigers, a 4-year Christian, liberal arts school. The school is also influenced by the Baptist tradition and strives to provide quality academics to students and encourages students to live, learn and believe. Georgetown excels in many areas, from academics to athletics. This close knit college town community strives to ensure Georgetown is in the spotlight and the city rallies around the many sporting events the school competes in. The school is consistently ranked as one of the top liberal arts schools in the area.
